SHIVER. And Play-Doh
So, I'm supposed to be working on revisions for my deadline tomorrow, but my mom couldn't babysit until 2. So, I decided to break out the play-doh with the kids.

And may have gotten carried away.

I did not know you were also a claymation genius. O.o
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on June 21st, 2009 11:46 pm (UTC)
Well . . . not a genius yet. But stop motion was a love of mine when I was a teen and it's fun to actually get to play with it now.

Also, that's awesome.

Oh man, I learned to never try to use play-doh for any creative endeavors after today, that's for sure. So thanks. It doesn't really . . . keep . . . its . . . shape.

Wow, the transformation was awesome! I'm beginning to think home school kids learn all kinds of ninja skills we public-schoolers miss out on...

Totally unrelated to this post, but have you considered having any of your characters be homeschooled? I remember you wrote about not being able to have your characters on summer vacation forever... well, I for one have always been incredibly curious about what it's like to be home schooled, and I'd be interested in reading about it...

Also unrelated to this post, I had some time to digest LAMENT, and I thought of another big thing that really struck me: having Luke and Dee swap memories was really ingenious... I've always wondered how to get around limited perspective with a first person narrator... how do you explain scenes that the MC is not there for? You tidily answered that question.

You also said that SHIVER is the kind of book you like to read, as opposed to LAMENT and BALLAD. I'm not sure if you've already answered this, but what do you think is the big difference? I enjoyed LAMENT so much it is hard to imagine that it's a kind of book one could be not completely excited about :P Needless to say, definitely has me anticipating SHIVER that much more!

Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on June 22nd, 2009 02:25 pm (UTC)
One day, I'm sure I will have a home-schooled character, especially as you can get into all kinds of mischief (some play-doh induced) when you don't have a set schedule.

The thing about SHIVER is that it's just a tiny bit more plausible than LAMENT/ BALLAD. Don't get me wrong, I love love love faerie stories. But SHIVER is framed with a scientific explanation for the werewolves, and so it's easier to get your brain stuck in the world.

I do think that BALLAD is a happy medium between LAMENT and BALLAD. You'll have to let me know!
jamileigh17[info]jamileigh17 on June 22nd, 2009 01:52 am (UTC)
LOL! That is hilarious and awesome, and I am in utter wonder at your playdough shaping skills. Mine still resemble a four year old's mashup.
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on June 22nd, 2009 02:25 pm (UTC)
It is not a medium I think I would ever choose to revisit.
Jackie[info]fabulousfrock on June 22nd, 2009 02:00 am (UTC)

BEST. BOOK. TRAILER. EVER!

You should make one for all your books, lol. :)

PS Are you still contemplating coming to the Claudia Gray/Elizabeth Scott signing? Also, have you read Love You Hate You Miss You yet? I just finished it today and it's SOOOO GOOD!!
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on June 22nd, 2009 02:27 pm (UTC)
I have a prettier one (not with playdoh) that I made for SHIVER, but I'm not releasing it to the world until July 6th.

I havne't read that one yet! I'm still leaning towards yes for going there, if I get my copyedits for BALLAD done.

Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on June 22nd, 2009 02:28 pm (UTC)
Adding three digit integers to other three digit integers. Spelling the word "acknowledgments" without a spell checker. Cooking fish. The list goes on and on.

;p

*snort* Nookie

I used to eat play-doh when I was a kid... probably explains a lot. I've never tried scultping with it before...

Also, what did the kids think of this?
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on June 22nd, 2009 02:28 pm (UTC)
Play Doh is utterly non toxic.

Thing 2 wanted me to animate his pile of play-doh that he had made. I declined.
Sparky[info]sherwood21 on June 22nd, 2009 03:32 am (UTC)
I love you. I think this should totally be an official commercial for Shiver.
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on June 22nd, 2009 02:29 pm (UTC)
If it becomes the Official Commerical for Shiver, I am going to have to dub myself singing "la la la some boys are wolves" in the background, to the music.
