Vomiting (as depicted in art) and Maggie Acting Out of Character
First, I must include a random photo of the most distressing cake I have ever made. Thing 1's birthday party was yesterday and she requested a princess cake on short notice, with low provisions. So I was forced to create the Fugly Cake with princesses baked inside. I am displaying it here for everyone who as ever asked me "Maggie, what can't you do?"

That, my friends, is my answer.

Anyway, onto my anecdote. The other day I was driving down from a fairly disastrous trip to an Elizabeth Scott book signing (disastrous because there was no Elizabeth Scott there). In tow I had my sister and Thing 1 & Thing 2.

Anyway, on the way back, to make up for sitting in traffic on the Devil's Vortex of Doom, High Blood Pressure, and Wankers in Porsches*, my sister asked if we could stop at this antiques place that always had cool furniture sitting out front. Since I'd just subjected her to five hours of driving, I acquiesced.

*otherwise known as I-95

I am not normally an antiques person. I did not even realize that 'antique' could be a verb until a few years ago. So I was largely disinterested. I did, however, find myself highly attracted to this mug/ stein thing. As you can see at the right, it depicts people dancing in pairs, holding fiddles, and . . . vomiting. I mean, what is that guy doing there on the left? Do you see him? The one with the string of something coming from his mouth?

I am pretty sure that is an excess of Heineken, right there.

Anyway, so if you guys ever wanted to know what kind of things would spur me to act out of character and spending money, now you know. Salt-glazed German guys playing music and vomiting artistically.

You have a better explanation for what that gentleman is doing?

I think the cake looks decent for short notice.

Beer tasting? lol I dunno!

Princesses baked inside?! Really, the cake isn't horrible looking for short notice, but I'm concerned with the whole baking princesses inside. ;-) Hope she had a happy birthday (and that the baked princesses received a proper funeral). =D

Um . . . yeah, I'm with you on thinking the guy is puking his guts out. LOL I know I shouldn't laugh, but what an ironic thing to put on a beer stein. =D
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on July 5th, 2009 03:48 pm (UTC)
They died a fiery baked goods death!

I was attracted to it just because of the weird dancing action, but when I saw the puke . . .I had to have it.

He absolutely is puking his guts out. Also, there are a bunch of traditional woodcuts in the 16th and 17th centuries that always have someone barfing whenever there is any scene of revelry, so the stein is participating in a long and venerable tradition of depicting men who can't hold their liquor.

Thank . . . is . . . absolutely AWESOME.

Aww, c'mon it's not that bad! And it's what Thing 1 thought that counts.

Make yourself feel better over at the cake wrecks blog http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/search/label/Beyond%20Bizarre

or be very very disturbed by cake

And I can take some small comfort in knowing that I did make my own wedding cake (you can see part of it here:)

I'm just never doing requests again!

Is Thing 1 really yours? If she is, I would have thought she'd ask for a creepy Dracula castle instead of a Princess one.

Les

PS Your wedding cake looks fab! Did you make the dress too?
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on July 5th, 2009 04:27 pm (UTC)
Thing 1 is distressingly girly. I don't know where she came from.

And thanks. And the dress: Noo, I have no talent for sewing. Or no interest. One of those!
ariablackfire[info]ariablackfire on July 5th, 2009 04:34 pm (UTC)
you should write a story about the princess in the fugly cake of doom.

I love old, odd things. I have a variety of odds and ends. My favorite is a candelabra that I like to ghost about in my house with on halloween... secretly... dressed in all black... Hey we all need to be melodramtic every once in a while! Especially when no one is home! Anyway, I love your mug! Also, happy birthday Thing 1! Yours is just a few days from mine!
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on July 6th, 2009 01:54 am (UTC)
I can just imagine the ripe markets for princesses in fugly cakes of doom. Tell ya what, you can have that story idea. It's in the free and clear. Go on, take it. ;p

And what, melodramatic every once in awhile? I have made my CAREER melodrama! muahahahhaha!
gigglievs[info]gigglievs on July 5th, 2009 05:12 pm (UTC)
that mug... umm WOW!! never would have imagined!! LMAO
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on July 6th, 2009 01:54 am (UTC)

But hey, at least you saw me and Diana, and got two signed books (one from me for free!).

I love these two pics. And that cake looks pretty darn amazing. But then again, I can't cook at all so I'm sure anything you made would look good to me, lol. Nice expression though! :)
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on July 6th, 2009 01:55 am (UTC)
I was just telling Tessa [info]everflame today about how you saved the day, because she was asking me what I was reading. And I said "let me tell you a story . . . "

And you're too kind about the cake. No really, too kind. ;p

You're so right
There's not enough vomiting in artwork. Roman vomitoriums and the occasional stein seem to about cover it, I think.

The cake looks yummy. If I were 5 I would appreciate it.

Do you want to make me a 21st birthday cake? Send it to Cambridge, MA? Love Rach! :)

P.S. I just remembered I FORGOT TO GIVE MY COPY OF SHIVER TO MY GODMOTHER SO YOU CAN SIGN IT. damnit. :(

I love German things. It must be that it is part of my heritage, dunno. But I did not know antique is a verb! Hmm...

<33333
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on July 6th, 2009 02:03 am (UTC)
She can score you another one and you can give her her unsigned one and you can both read it again and laugh and cry over the joy and sadness that is Sam and Grace. ;p

Also, you don't want a 21st birthday cake from me. You want one from One Tough Cookie.

And yes. Verb. As in "We went antiquing." Which means: "looking for steins with men vomiting on them."

Wonderful stein! And totally part of the traditional depictions of revelry.
But I liked the cake. It had a wonderful gingerbread house feel to it. It was the pink trim I think.
Hugs and smiles,
Jean Marie

And thanks. I think Gingerbread is kinder than "House of Usher." ;p

hee hee I hope your daughter enjoyed the cake despite the fact it could be a cake wrecks nominee tee hee

And that mug, BTW, is awesome! That is exactly the reason why I love antiquing so much :)

I also, finally, got to watch the Shiver trailer! The stop-motion is awesome!

Take care!

Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on July 6th, 2009 02:35 am (UTC)
See! You used it as a verb! That's amazing to me. ;p

And thanks. I'm glad you finally got to see the trailer!

Maybe Mr. Mug is from the South. He could be spitting tobacco. Ok, so the vomitting theory makes more sense, but still.

Lovely wedding cake. The princess cake beats a Burger King cake any day. You're a mom with mad baking skills for sure. Really.
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on July 6th, 2009 01:24 pm (UTC)
That is a LOT of tobacco.

And thanks. Burger King has cakes?
And out of the red, out of her head she sang...[info]pandorasblog on July 6th, 2009 10:56 am (UTC)
The guy on the mug is actually playing that party game where you have to use a drinking straw to suck up Smarties (or M&Ms, as the case may be) and deposit them on a plate. He is cheating by using an exceptionally large straw.

Cake - hey, I never had a castle cake when I was little! I now feel quite bereft.

Best. Answer. Ever.
Alana Joli Abbott[info]alanajoli on July 6th, 2009 07:35 pm (UTC)
Ha! The cake's still better than I could have done, but your reassurance that you're not a superhuman is appreciated. :) The pink icing is a nice touch though!

And I agree--I think the dude's totally puking.
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on July 6th, 2009 07:48 pm (UTC)
Heee . . . no problem.

That guy possibly ate too much pink cake.
Sarah[info]bookduck on July 6th, 2009 08:31 pm (UTC)
Looks like vomit to me, too :D

And I think that's a great princess cake! It's not just one flat rectangle; it stands up and everything! And it has pink frosting, which I'm pretty sure is a requirement for princess cakes.
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on July 6th, 2009 08:33 pm (UTC)
Yes. It does indeed stand up by itself. And is pink. However, you should've seen us trying to cut it.
