Winner of the SHIVER Audio Book Contest & My Casting Choices
ETA: Folks, I have NO part in the actual casting choices/ auditioning/ anything having to do with the movie -- that is all in the realm of Unique Features & Warner Bros. The movie option is also the VERY early stages of moviedom, so they're not even looking for actors yet. This is merely a fun post about who I think looks like the characters in my head. In reality, I think a Shiver movie would be best served by plucking some unknown actors out of the woodwork -- folks who can act no matter if they look exactly like my idea of Sam and Grace or not.

**Here ends public service announcement**

Onto the audio book contest. First of all, I clicked on everybody's links and looked at everybody's Sam and Graces. And people. Please! Tom Sturridge is far too edgy to be Sam (although I found the photo of him in a bathtub absolutely hilarious given the circumstances). Sam is an innocent bambi! Anyway. First of all, my picks for Sam and Grace.

For Grace, I'd always thought Dakota Blue Richards, because she'll be the perfect age. But then one of the Very Clever Commentors suggested Rachel Hurd Wood and I thought OH! WAY BETTER GRACE! I like her because she's pretty in a very approachable, plausible, non-Hollywood sort of way, and looks like she could take werewolves in stride.

Dakota Blue Richards (yes, I KNOW she's too young here):

Rachel Hurd Wood:

joomla 1.5 statistics

For Sam, it was harder, because I don't think of him as Hollywood-handsome. In SHIVER, I think I describe him as having a nose a girl couldn't pull off and floppy black hair. And I think I mentioned his heavy lidded eyes. I'm very big on the heavy-lidded eyes for him. Oh, and fuzzy eyebrows. So at first, I was sort of thinking Lee Pace, who is way too old (sorry, Lee, I still think you're very pretty. Just not jailbait age):

then I thought Jim Sturgess from Across the Universe captured Sam's Beatlesesque image, but still too old (again, no offense, Jim, your version of "Girl" still makes me want to remove layers of clothing):

And then I realized that if I made the easy leap from actor to rock star, I was golden. Because I think Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys is terribly Sam-like to me. See?

Example 2:

Example 3:

You're feeling it, right? Alex, call my agent . . . oh yeah, and don't get any older, okay?

ETA 8/29/09:

Okay, I have film on the brain. I just saw Nanny McPhee and I have a new favorite actress for Grace -- Eliza Bennett. You can see it, can't you?

And I know no one will agree with me, but I think Jason Flemyng would be a great Ulrik.

I'm not sure why I needed to edit this post so urgently, at 9 p.m. at night after watching Nanny McPhee. I just did. And now I have.

Anyway. The randomly generated winner of the audio book (only one, there were 48 comments and slightly fewer than that entries) was [info]wandren -- shoot me an email!

I have to admit after I saw Rachel I think she'd be perfect too. Alex would make an incredible Sam, he's insanely cute.

Plus, he even looks all wolfish in that last one. See the similarities?

Alex Turner, haha, I love that!
Mostly just because I was scrolling down my flist and saw pictures of Alex Turner and started grinning. (What, fangirl? I'm pretty sure I had a desktop background including that first picture at one point, actually).

His hair is pretty out of control lately, though. Which, actually, is probably closer to how I pictured Sam.

(Man, why did I delete my Alex Turner icon...)

I loooove your Grace casting.

I pictured Jake Silbermann as Sam while I was reading:

http://www.ohlalaparis.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/06/01/atwt010607.jpg

http://welovesoaps.com/silbermanndna.jpg (put your shirt on, Sam)

Anyway, if they make a beautiful little movie out of this, I'm sure they'll find some relative unknown and fans everywhere will collectively faint. Old and young alike.

Have you ever cast your Lament/Ballad babies?
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on August 22nd, 2009 02:19 am (UTC)
Oh, Jake does have some good Sam points, like his unfortunate nose. I sort of half-heartedly cast Lament awhile ago (I still stand by my Luke casting, although now I really want to throw in a bit of Ryan Gosling a la Fracture era).

And did hunt down a James for BALLAD in earnest, and I still like that actor for him quite a bit. Sean Biggerstaff:

[info]readingisgoodforyou.wordpress.com on August 23rd, 2009 06:31 pm (UTC)
I find it really hard to cast books, since I don't watch a lot of movies or tv and the people I picture in my head as I read don't always fit the typical Hollywood imgage(I like people with unusual features, and Hollywood, with their emphasis on plastic surgery and the like, doesn't seem to understand that appeal).

Sam was easy for me. I pictured him as Matty from Lois Lowry's The Messenger. See here: http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b321/Cailiosa/Sam.jpg
It's the eyes that did it for me -- they've got a mournful quality about them -- and he's got such a sensitive face.

Grace I initially pictured as a non-descript blonde, but this girl seemed so timid in my head and that never lined up with how Grace was described. One evening I was watching So You Think You Can Dance as I re-read Shiver, and Jeanine Mason came on the screen. She popped into my head as I read about Grace and she wouldn't leave. Jeanine may not look a thing like Grace, but I think her personality matches how Grace is when she's around Sam. Here she is:

casting for sam
There is an actor by the name of Logan O'brien, he's seventeen but he would make a perfect sam. If you look at his photo he actually looks like he has sam's golden yellowish brown eyes. Maggie take a look.

Loved this book can't wait until linger is available and would love to she the movie to shiver.

I'm definitely seeing the Grace I imagined in the second Nanny McPhee picture. And that last Alex picture.... MMM. Come to me, Sammy. ; )

I'm actually really pleased with the way you imagined Sam. I was trying to get the hair right in my head, and the face and all that... but it was kind of hard. I had to pound into my brain that he has black hair and yellow eyes. Now I'm glad that I can see what you see. I actually wasn't too far off once I got the colors down, and that makes me happy, because I had him looking pretty adorable.

I can totally see Eliza as Grace and Alex as Sam, but Orlando Bloom would do the character more justice with his dark eyes and moppy hair! That would be great!

Out of those pictures, I see Rachel Hurd Wood as Grace. Eliza is far from what I imagined when reading the book. Altogether, I don't think that there should be a movie. In my opinion,it ruins the feel of the book. It's amazing as it is, the movie'll just ruin the book. :/

Writer Question
Hi Maggie,

I've seen you on the Verla Kay boards, and love Shiver! I had heard bits about your agency search process, and was wondering if you could share when and how you knew it was time to go to the publishers directly. I'm struggling with that myself, but don't know if my problem is my book (in which case, I shouldn't go to the publishers yet) or just not finding the right fit.

Thanks!
Your Fan
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on September 28th, 2009 06:57 pm (UTC)
Re: Writer Question
I actually didn't query agents before I went to publishers. I went straight to publishers at first (which was not wise of me). I had been querying for years and when I got a handful of form rejections for a query, I would tweak the query and try again. You know you're getting close if you're getting requests for pages and good comments on the pages. If you're getting form nos on your query, your query needs help. If you're getting form nos on your pages, your book needs help. Good luck.
