BALLAD Playlist and The Ultimate Amazing Ballad Contest
All righty. I'm about to run off to Minnesota for six days of book related fun fun fun but before I left, I wanted to put up the rules and prizes for the most exciting Ballad contest yet (writers, listen up).

Okay, first of all, the prizes.

The absolute grand prize about which I am enormously excited is

A 1 chapter (or 15 double-spaced pages, whichever comes first) critique by all three of the Merry Sisters of Fate:
me, Brenna Yovanoff (author of forthcoming FE in '10)(brennayovanoff ) and Tessa Gratton (possessor of secret news I wish I could share)(tessagratton ). These are my two critique partners, who read every manuscript I write before it makes it to my editors. They rip and tear my manuscripts apart and put them back together like nobody's business. I would not be who I was without them and I'm thrilled that they've agreed to do this.

The first prize is this swank messenger bag. Not just a swank messenger bag, but a swank messenger bag stuffed with a signed Ballad, a signed Lament, a signed Shiver, and a signed Shiver audio book.

And the second prize is stack of books all involving the paranormal and teens and death and good stuff:

a signed copy of BALLAD
NEED by Carrie Jones
GRACELING by Kristin Cashore
IMPOSSIBLE by Nancy Werlin
THIRSTY by M. T. Anderson

And the third prize is

a signed audiobook of Shiver (what? I have a lot of them)

And here are the rules:

To enter, you must find a copy of Ballad in the wild -- that is, in a bookstore of any ilk. You do not have to buy said copy of Ballad. All you have to do is whip out your camera or your cell phone and have someone take a picture of you holding it. That's one entry. That's it. You want another chance to win? Have your sister pose next to you. She doesn't have to buy the book either. Or even hold a copy. She does need to be looking at the camera though. Want another chance to win? Have that random woman browsing the Sarah Dessen books stand next to your sister. Again, she doesn't have to hold the book. Or even know you. Just be willing to smile into the camera in proximity to someone holding the book. Want visual examples? Of course you do.

This is ONE ENTRY. Notice James is holding the book and looking at the camera.
TWO ENTRIES. Dee is not holding a book, but she is eyeballing the camera. Vaguely.

THREE ENTRIES. Nuala is not holding a book either, but she's looking at the camera.

FOUR ENTRIES. None of them know the king of the dead, but he's looking at the camera (I think. His eyes are shadowed.) He doesn't have to hold that book, but he is anyway because he's so darn thrilled to be in it.

Then what I need you to do is take the photos and post them somewhere online -- I don't care if it's your facebook, livejournal, photobucket, mom's website, whatever, that's not important. The only thing that's important is that you link them here. You can embed them directly in the comment if you have the voodoo to do that. Or you can just send me a link. Make sure it's someplace I can see it and do a headcount. Bonus prize to someone who gets more than 20 people in a photo. ;) I'll think of something good . . .

Got the idea? Okay, to give you plenty of time to find it in the wild, we're running this baby through October 10th, which is the second Saturday in October. Pleeeeeennnnny of time to find it.

And with that said, here's the playlist for Ballad. I need to preface this by saying that I used a ton of Celtic music like this awesome Kila song, bands like Lunasa and Solas and singers like Iarla O Lionaird whose name is too awesome for me to spell however such music is not available on heathen sites like Imeem or Playlist.com. (their loss). For those who are interested in the finding of Celticky stuff, I will do a post on that when I get back and have loads of time.

Okay. So that behind me, here's the playlist of the rock music I used for Ballad. Those who loved the playlist for Shiver may be somewhat shocked as the Shiver playlist reflects the fact that Sam is the type of boy you could bring home to your parents. And James . . . is not.

Get a playlist! Standalone player Get Ringtones

See you guys in a week! Happy contesting!

*in looking at my icon*

Have you ever noticed the similarities between James/Nuala and Howl/Calcifer?

Oh my hotpants! I would love to have my current WIP critiqued by The Merry Sisters of Fate. Wow! I want that. I'm plotting my attack as I write this. =)

Wow. Wow. Um..contest deadline?

Danielle

(See ya tomorrow in Chi-town-ish...it's Downers Grove...doesn't really count as Chicago...but Yay! See ya there!)

Oops. I can read...Deadline October 10th.

I was overly excited about the prizes and skipped over that part!

Weirdness. Both the Placebo and Fuel songs are on my current WIP play list. If I wasn't at work, I'd be cranking up the rest of your list.

Have a lunch date with the husband. I sense two (count them - TWO) entries in your delightful contest when I return.

Contest
I am totally going to do this! Just need to get to the store to find it!
PS I really wish that you were going to be in Chicago this weekend...I would love to meet you but I wont be there until the 26...D= lol

Oh, this is just brilliant.

I now want to RECREATE THIS VERY SCENE in my local bookstore. They had better have the book.

If I find the king of the dead in my bookstore, I'll buy him a copy of the book. He probably doesn't carry cash.

Wow! Great contest! I'll have to see if I can pull it off.

I have already expended more fannish energy than I have to spare on the authorial awesome of Maggie Stiefvater by making this video. (Inspired by your incredible skills as a writer/artist/musician/what-have-you.)

I would love to enter your contest, but truly, after having handdrawn more than a few animation panels for you, I am afraid I cannot get off the fainting couch. Therefore I offer you my devotion instead. :)

That's a great video. =)

AT EVERY STORE WITHIN 40 MILES OF ME! I WILL make this work.

I've been getting, "That book doesn't come out until October 1."

It won't come out until oct 1 so I guess I'll have to wait some more. Pre ordering won't work since I'll get it AFTER oct 1. *sigh*
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on September 28th, 2009 06:24 pm (UTC)
Yep, that's why I made the deadline so far off . . .

Have a good trip!

Ooooh, you're making me visit all the bookshops in my area! It'll be terrible! Such torture, to have to go and rustle through all those books!

:D
malinda_lomalinda_lo on September 22nd, 2009 07:17 pm (UTC)
I just wanted to say this is a truly awesome playlist and I may have to borrow it for my next book. :) Also, congrats on all your success with SHIVER!
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on September 28th, 2009 06:25 pm (UTC)
Thanks, Malinda! Good luck with Ash -- I've heard so much about it. I tried in vain to grab an ARC at ALA. :D
dd_tauscher on September 22nd, 2009 08:54 pm (UTC)
Oh! And Maggie. I'm an absolute introvert and having to possible ask random people in a bookstore to take a picture with me as I'm holding a book is so far out of my comfort zone it's in the next state.

So-um-thanks! =)

Loving the playlist. Few songs on there are making it into my iTunes.

Yaaaay, this is exciting! And I really, really want that first prize!

Also, looking forward to your Celtic-music post. I adore Celtic music, and have a ton on my iPod -- but I'm always looking for more!

Hmmm . . . I think I can manage this . . . well, except the part about my sister. All of them are out of state.

Be vewy vewy qwiet, we're hunting Bawads.
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on September 28th, 2009 06:26 pm (UTC)
Sisters are optional. Neither Dee nor Nuala are related to James, or else it would be a TOTALLY different kind of book. ;p
Prince of Maineyuenmei on September 23rd, 2009 12:39 am (UTC)
...Oh my god. That is... the best prize ever. I'm kind of freaking out over here.

I'm going to be so stressed trying to figure out how to get the whole store to pose with me.
Seeker of Benevolent Chaos: Creepyjesterjoker on September 23rd, 2009 04:02 am (UTC)
I think if anyone dresses as the king of the dead in their entry they should get a very bizarre special prize. Bugger if I know what.
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on September 28th, 2009 06:27 pm (UTC)
I agree with you. Totally. I would come up with something, like a square inch of hell, or a pot of sulphur, or a Radiohead CD, or SOMETHING.

Wow contest of AWESOME! *grabbing camera, stuffing in purse so as not to forget it on next Borders trip...* I hope no one calls the coppers on me, because I'm planning on accosting random people in Borders for this photo op.

Your Ballad playlist is pure deliciousness! Map of the Problematique is probably one of my all-time favorite Muse songs! ahhh. And Eisley! I love your musical taste.
pixilated24pixilated24 on September 26th, 2009 06:51 pm (UTC)
Cool contest!
The most amazing thing happened to me
yesterday concerning you:
Lament was no longer out of stock at my bookstore!
I bought it like lightening and glopped it down in 3 hours.
It. Was. Amazing.
And hilarious (2 words: Killer Bunnies)
But also every sad as well.
The books deserves a round of appluase.
Congrats (:

Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on September 28th, 2009 06:28 pm (UTC)
*grin* Thank you SO MUCH. I'm so glad you loved it! (though I do love Ballad more and can't wait to hear what readers think of it).

I think it has to be just U.S. for this contest, unfortunately!
