NaNoWriMo: Day One: What Am I Doing?
Those of you also doing NaNoWriMo are infinitely aware that it is now November, and thus that writing can begin on NaNo novels.

So what am I doing today?

I am reading.

Why, you ask, in a race to 50K words, am I spending the first day of NaNo reading? Well, first of all, because I get terrible writer's block if I don't read several books a month. writers = readers. And second, because it's Sunday, and Sunday is a day that I don't write, no matter what my evil deadline is, because it is a day to recharge batteries. For me, it's a good rule, and NaNo's not going to change that.

Here's the thing about NaNo, or any other deadline. It is not a helter skelter race to the end, an every second writing sort of affair. Think of it this way: an average scene in a novel is 2-3K words long. That means that what you're really looking at with a 50K NaNo novel is not 1,666 words written every single day, you're looking at writing 16-25 scenes that lead toward an end. Which means, some days, if you are calculated and thoughtful and in the mood, you can power out two or three great scenes -- 4,000-10,000 words. Writing words just to write words will get you more words, but no closer to the end. Writing scenes and worrying about wordcount secondarily? That'll get you somewhere.

So yeah. Day one, NaNo. Word count: 0. Perturbed? Not yet.

Nano
I had considered starting tomorrow, but my Manbeef went for a ride on his Harley and it's quiet. I read from Anna Godbersen's novel, SPLENDOR, this morning and I think I'm ready to begin my own romance-type project. http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/526305

Happy writing!

I was unaware the average length of a scene. Thank to you, dear Maggie, I have a general idea :)

Re: Nano
Same to you! Although, you probably don't need it. I'm doing good so far--almost 6k words. And it's not terrible.

More words than me!

I agree. I'm not doing NaNo but your statement really applies to a problem I have had with my writing in the past. I would set word counts as goals but that was getting me nowhere. I would be all over the place in my writing and the draft would end up being just a bunch of unrelated garbage. Now I still write garbage but my scenes are focused. I think and plan more these days.

I salute you for sticking to your guns. No changing routines for NaNo. It certainly will not be my master. That's why I'm off to the bookstore to peruse the shelves and get pumped up.

I just figure, writing in a short time is the same as writing in a long time, right? Except without bathroom breaks?

NaNo exhaustion
Yep definitely a challenge to find the happy medium. I really did try hard to focus today because I start back at work tomorrow after two weeks off. Overall today was a good Nano day but really exhausting. Thanks to your post I will definitely give myself time off to relax and do my usual things like watch Project Runway. If I'm reading a really great book I find it hard to write my own story because I get Caught up with the characters from the book and my own characters begin to fade away. I expect this is a weakness of my wn characterisation but wonder if you have ever had this problem?

By the way I loved your earlier Nano prep post.

Re: NaNo exhaustion
I'm glad you liked the earlier prep post!

I was a lot more influenced by what I wrote back when I started, back as a teen. Then it was definitely don't read what I'm writing sort of thing. Now, I can read on Sundays and compartmentalize; it helps that I feel like I've really found my "style" and so if I start getting fannish I think I can tell.

But yeah, for me I'd rather do productive 8K days with breaks in between.

I kind of both agree and disagree. While yes, words for words sake won't necessarily get you any closer to the end, there's something to be said about pushing yourself to a speed where you no longer censor yourself.

I do have a very basic outline to keep them and myself on track, but I'm 3000 words into my NaNo novel and already my characters are taking me into scenes I never expected, in part because I'm free enough to let them.

I agree!

That's true . . . but I've written enough novels that I don't really need the extra pressure to kill off my internal editor. She and I know each other pretty well. ;)

That sounds great... you need a resting day. Plus, like you said, reading is essential to being a good writer.

=) Enjoy yourself!

I'm so happy that you write by scenes. That's all I seem to be able to do. "Wouldn't this be cool? then this...then this..."

I agree! I know the pressure and challenge is fun, like everyone is in the trenches at once with NaNoWriMo, but I have enough stress, writing is fun time!

I spent the morning cleaning my house, because I cannot write in a messy house. It's funny, because my writing space is actually separate from the rest of the house, but as I have to walk through it to get to the coffee, cleaning was vital. It removes the "I should be doing X instead of writing" factor.

I don't sweat daily word count. I just write the book.
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 1st, 2009 07:04 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I agree. I also have to tidy my desk in order to write. Which is idiotic.

I am all for a day of rest. My day of rest is Thursday. It is the only day that I bow to the television gods, throw my IQ into the fire, and partake in mind numbing viewing. I am a big fan of Grey's Anatomy and The Practice.

I read everyday. When I don't read I walk around convinced I have left something somewhere. It's very disorienting.

I have started writing . . . one scene down. Yeah!!

Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 1st, 2009 07:04 pm (UTC)
Whoohoo! And yep, I'm all for structure and schedule and mind numbing TV days (for me, it's Monday . . . Lie to Me is my thing)

I write slowly so 3k words for me is a big day. I have a book planned but I'm just putting words down. Half of anything I write on any day I usually delete. I'll be away half the month so nano is all about discipline for me. I follow where spirit leads me, and I get to play with new words and hopefully learn something.
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 2nd, 2009 12:37 am (UTC)
Which is utterly the proper way to approach the thing, I think. Also, I owe you an email reply, I think . . .

I agree. While I finally decided what my NaNo novel should be, I've made a conscious decision not to start writing it yet. For me, it's because I need to do a little more research. I want to be confident in what I'm writing, not churning out words for the sake of words. I'll worry about NaNo tomorrow (or *cough* next week).
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 2nd, 2009 12:38 am (UTC)
Heee. We'll see if I'm rueing this later. Um, ruing. Is that a real word?

Uh...probably. I'm too lazy to grab a dictionary. :P

I have yet to begin my writing either. I'd like to say it's because I don't write on Sunday, but it's really because I'm still waffling about which story to write!

I had narrowed it down, but I keep changing my mind. Maybe it will come to me later today . . . or tomorrow . . . or sometime before November has left me in its dust. =D
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 2nd, 2009 12:38 am (UTC)
Yeah, I'm rather spoiled by having my story in mind long before November began.

It's a bit of a Scarlet O'Hara approach, now that I look at it. "I won't think about that today . . . "

You were kind of my inspiration. Yesterday it was 'aww, crap, I am getting nowhere'. And then I saw it: Maggie was reading, too. It could totally be okay not to leap right in.

Of course, late in the day, just before bed, the plot I had in mind seized my hindbrain, and demanded I write some of the poem and song-pieces necessary to the story, so I did get a word count in. But boy, did I need to hear that 'it is not a helter skelter race to the end'! I'm a lot more okay with only writing more of the creepy songs of the world I'm working in.
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 2nd, 2009 02:38 pm (UTC)
Ooooooooooh creeeepy songs!

Also, I'm glad I could be helpful. I have been up and drinking tea this morning and have a wordcount. And still feel totally non-guilty about not having this wordcount yesterday.

Leviathan, by Scott Westerfeld. Well, the first 144 pages.

Hmmm...I've heard interesting things about that book. I accidentally started re-reading Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen, and I'm loving it again.

I know all about the accidental reread. I started doing that with SAVING FRANCESCA last night.
