Five Things on a Friday: The Brownies & Cole Edition
1. I could post about something awesome before going off to NCTE, but instead, due to popular request, I am posting my Awesome Brownies That Taste Like Box Brownies recipe.

1/4 cup butter, melted
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 cup white sugar
1 tbs vanilla
2 eggs
1/2 cup cocoa powder (I like Hersheys' special dark)
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup chocolate chips
3/4 cup flour

Preheat oven to 350. Grease 8 x 8" baking dish. Combine everything but flour, cocoa, and salt, stir. Throw in everything else but the chips. Add the chips. Stir, baby! Bake 30 minutes or until a fork stuck in the middle just comes out clean (let set up for about 10 minutes before eating or they will be goopy).

2. I've posted the tentative dates for a lot a lot of the foreign editions of SHIVER, if you're curious.

3. I'm at about 20,000 words on my NaNo novel. Am I worried? Not yet . . . will be posting on this concept later.

4. Don't let your Jack Russell get into your brother's espresso. Just sayin'.

5. Musical obsession for the day/ month/ life: Anyway You Choose to Give It, by the Black Ghosts. It's on the playlist for Cole from LINGER . . . *gasp the spoilery, it kills me!*

Have fun at NCTE!

Did you mean 250 or 350 for the oven temp? 250 seems a bit low?
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 20th, 2009 03:24 pm (UTC)
LOL -- I just edited, so yes, 350!
Lisa Schroeder, Author for Kids and Teenslisa_schroeder on November 20th, 2009 03:28 pm (UTC)
Okay, didn't know - thought maybe you're a fan of soupy brownies and we've all been missing out or something! :)
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 20th, 2009 03:31 pm (UTC)
They ain't brownies unless you eat 'em with a spoon!

Um, no, I like brownie batter, but 250 would've been a bit extreme.
Nikki: chef nicolettebleuberi21 on November 20th, 2009 03:20 pm (UTC)
Did you really mean 250* or is it supposed to be 350*? ;0)

Those sound nummy!
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 20th, 2009 03:24 pm (UTC)
LOL -- I just edited as I looked over the post in horror!

Can I ask a question... I know you are allergic to preservatives, but what does that mean you CANNOT eat exactly? (Sorry I'm just really curious.)

Also...who is Cole? And that song = very kick @$$, but you always have good music suggestions (98% of them get downloaded to my iPod touch). :-)

I can't waaaaaaiiiiit for Linger!!!!!!!

Cole's from LINGER, and I'm not sayin' anything else. ;)

Preservatives, for me, are additives like sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, calcium propionate, msg . . . they do bad, bad things. I can eat anything in the world . . . that doesn't have those added.
seeyouupside on November 20th, 2009 04:24 pm (UTC)
Thanks for telling me...about your allergies, not Cole (still annoyed I have no idea who he is). I'm really interested so now I am going to use the vast source of the wooooorld (a.k.a. the internet) to look up more about it. :-)

Have a great weekend, Maggie!

Damn you! Why must you tempt me with your recipes for tasty baked goods when I'm dieting?

:weeps:

:drools:
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 27th, 2009 04:53 pm (UTC)
If you ONLY eat brownies, it's still dieting. ;)
Caroline Hootonhooton on November 27th, 2009 04:57 pm (UTC)
Pft! My fat backside says otherwise ... :)
Ziaziaria on November 20th, 2009 03:59 pm (UTC)

My whole family is obsessed with them.

MMM, brownies! I'm so going to try that recipe--I was going to go looking for a good brownie recipe a couple of weeks ago, but I got lazy and bought a box mix, even though I much prefer homemade goodies. Especially because the munchkins love to help me bake.

Now I get to be the idiot to ask if by 'white sugar' you mean like...white granulated sugar, or powdered sugar?

Yay for your NaNo progress! :D
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 27th, 2009 04:53 pm (UTC)
Granulated! :D
maggie_writesmaggie_writes on November 20th, 2009 09:48 pm (UTC)
Ah, Cole. I bet he's really hot. I can't wait to read kissing scenes with him. I hope there are kissing scenes. There better be kissing scenes.

Anyway, I'm at 28K with my NaNo. I'm planning on catching up to whatever it is I'm supposed to be at today, tomorrow and Sunday.
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 27th, 2009 04:53 pm (UTC)
You know I cannot write a book without kissing scenes.

Thanks for the Brownie recipe. ;) [now added to my Maggie recipes for Blondies and Cookie Dough ;) - still think there should be a Maggie cookbook combined with writing book - How to cook And write and find time for both.

Haven't checked out the music video yet but was curious about the foreign editions so clicked over there - cool video on the Italian edition!! [even tho' I can't technically read all the words involved. ;) ]

Congrats on All Those!!!

I read the description of Linger on Amazon and I am now calm about who Cole is.

Good.

I gave the recipe to my mommy and she's gonna help me make them tomarrow. We were gonna make cake anyway. Now we'll make brownies (: Yumm.

Geez, Linger's soooo far away. Like, 7 months right? Urghhhh long
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 27th, 2009 04:54 pm (UTC)
I am glad you are calm. :D

I'm a bit annoyed at my NaNoWriMo 'novel'. The story lied to me, it pretended to be of a novel length, but really it's a short story. I'm only about 12k in and could really wrap up the whole thing in under 5k. *sigh* Good luck with yours though!!!

I'm also going to try out your brownies since my Thanksgiving break is finally upon me!

Take care!!

That is the best kind. Now it is time to go back and PLUMP.
authorwithinauthorwithin on November 21st, 2009 02:27 am (UTC)
MMMMmmm Brownies. Food of the gods (or goddesses). I'm going to have to give that recipe a try. Are there any adjustments for high altitudes?

I'm WAY behind on my Nano novel. Not even close to 20,000 words. I don't think I'm going to reach the 50,000 word mark. But sometimes that's how things go. *shrug* I've been too busy trying to catch up on my homework this week to spend much time online OR writing. *sigh*

Joan
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 27th, 2009 04:55 pm (UTC)
There may be adjustments, but I don't know them. ;p Also because brownies don't have to rise much, I think you're probably good.
divawriterdivawriter on November 21st, 2009 05:42 am (UTC)
Oooo, those brownies sound good! I baked today also, some snickerdoodles and peanut butter cookies. I'm trying to keep myself busy as I wait to hear from an agent, so I must bake!

Shiver review
Hi,

I have just read this review regarding Shiver:
http://www.therejectionist.com/2009/11/todays-book-review.html

I would like to know your opinion on it.

Thank you
Cristina
Maggie Stiefvaterm_stiefvater on November 27th, 2009 04:45 pm (UTC)
Re: Shiver review
Huh. Well, some of the commenters expressed my thoughts probably more eloquently than I could . . . I think basically I should just say that I regard myself as a pretty kick-a$$ variety of the female gender and believe that girls need to be tough, kick-a$$ people in this world. I also think that comes in a lot of different forms, and that it doesn't always mean that you're an assassin or that you wear leather boots with rivets in them. I think Grace is pretty strong and so . . . I don't agree with that review in that respect.

What's your opinion?

Linger
Hi Maggie,
I know it's still pretty early, but I'm a bookseller and was wondering if you have any idea about ARC's of Linger? My coworkers and I are drooling over the possibility of getting one!
Thanks
:)

Re: Linger
Actually, they've just started printing them -- definitely ask your Scholastic rep about them.
