2011 Critique Partner Love Connection
I've been asked several times in the last few months if I would do another critique partner love connection on my blog and I now have enough requests that I'm going to go ahead and do it. I did one WAY back when and, looking at it, I find that the wording on it still mostly applies, so here we go:

Okay. As y'all know, I have two critique partners ([info]tessagratton and [info]brennayovanoff ) whom I love dearly. They rip and tear at my ms with everything they have in them and they read what I read and love what I love and . . .well, after a long critique partner search, I have learned much about what I need in crit partners, and they are what I need.

However, it's come to my attention that not all of my blog readers have found what they need, and they're having a hard time putting out a call for crit partners on their own blogs because of traffic. Some of them are really good too -- agented or published or close to agented or published, and they need someone at that level. Others are just starting out.

So I thought I might do a Crit Partner Love Connection here on my blog, if anybody's looking. This is PRECISELY the way I found Tessa and Brenna.

Here are the rules, such as I ever have rules:

Post a comment saying the age range (adult, YA, MG), a brief, one-sentence blurb about your book or just the genre if you don't want to share more than that, and whether or not you have an agent, etc. Also the last book that you read that you loved that you feel epitomizes you as a reader.

Then, if someone sounds appealing to you, you send them a message saying so and find out if it's mutual. If it is, you exchange the first 50 pages of your manuscripts, critique them, and return said critiques. If either of you doesn't feel like the crit relationship is working at that point, you get to smile and say thanks and walk away without any questions asked. That's the way it works.

NOTE: I myself am not looking for critters. Two partners is enough for me -- I can't keep up with anymore. I recommend definitely two or three partners for best results. That way when someone says "this sucks!" and someone else says "does not!" you can be the tie breaker. But if they both say "this sucks!" and you say "does not!" it means you're wrong. ;)

Okay. Go! Any questions?

Thanks for doing this Maggie! I was just thinking about getting a crit partner the other day :)
Okay so:
My novel is young adult (paranormal/adventure/romance genre). It's about angels. Kind of.
I'm currently at 30,000 words. I plan to start querying agents as soon as I'm done.
The last book I read that I really loved was Across The Universe by Beth Revis.
Oh, and I'm Canadian :)
scampii091[info]scampii091 on April 7th, 2011 02:26 pm (UTC)
You sound too good to be true...hi :)

Your novel sounds exciting, I'm like: Want. To. Read. I'd be very happy to crit. the first 50 pages of your story if you'd be willing to let me?

Where abouts in Canada do you hail from? My current novel is set there (in British Columbia, I think). THIS IS A BONUS BEYOND BELIEF.

I loved Across The Universe and my BFF is obsessed with it. I also love angels, though I have never read any books about them. I probably should. ;)

Oh how exciting! I really hope doing something like this will help me move along.
My novel is adult (supernatural/angst/romance genre). Here's my blurb...A young woman escapes her abusive marriage through a series of dreams, but could they be something more?
I'm at nearly 50,000 words and only half way into the story. I am without an agent.
I prefer young adult fiction and the last book I read was Linger. ;)
Also, I'm a teacher with a film background.

I'm interested. :)
I'm Liz -
I'm currently writing an adult (fantasy/romance genre) novel that has gotten me stumped and need someone who will tell me how bad it is and where I need to start again. I'm about 43K into it. It could easily transfer to YA but I like it the way it is.

I'm also working on a YA novel. It's got about 25K words currently. Here's my little blurb about it: "My name is Megan Ross. I’m seventeen years old. My boyfriend is dead and I live on the streets. Life really hasn’t gone the way I’d planned it, and this certainly wasn’t a part of the plan."
I am also without an agent. I'd love to read what you have.

The last book I read that really caught my attention that I loved - seriously - was Shiver and Linger. (and I'm not just saying that because this is Maggie's blog.) I love all sorts of books and have just recently come to my love of YA. My favorite books are the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. I love the Wind in the Doorway series by Madeline L’Engle.

You can email me at princess (dot) evans (at) gmail (dot) com if you're interested.

Okay, I'll bite. :)

My name is Sarah and I'm currently writing a MG/YA novel that's not quite ready for critique (steampunk/fantasy) but for which I'd love some worldbuilding and plotting help (it's outlined, now it only remains to be written). I would love to help people with their stories though; I'm good at helping with characterization and action, some plotting (I can tell if it works/holds my attention but it's not yet my strength) and at grammar/spelling.

The last book I read and adored was "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho (not YA); the last YA book I read and loved was "The Replacement" by Brenna Yovanoff.

This sounds great, im currently re-writing a book and slowly editing another (i hand write my drafts). The first is about a girl with a split personality and how she comes to realize that shes really the person every ones been looking for and the other is a werewolf book about Georgiana, who lives in a world where supernatrals are out of the closet and must be black so humans can avoid them. Shes sent to a rehab type school after killing for many years and must learn how to survive and find a way out.
The last book i read was Fury by Shirley Marr and the last book i fell in love with was Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. What do you think?

I love this idea, Maggie! I would love a critique partner, and look forward to being able to help anyone I can with their stories :)

My new novel is YA and is about death, dreams, and secret messages.

I currently do not have an agent, although I am a published author of a non-fiction book for parents of children with autism.

I would be open to a partner at any stage in the game. I have already completed a different novel that I am seeking representation for, but for some reason keep getting stuck with this new one. Currently, I'm at about 20,000 words.

The last book I read and loved was Before I Die by Jenny Downham.

Seeking CP! Must be vicious and clever, also must love gators.
I write YA paranormal/speculative/other things that come with magical elements.

I've just completed a near final draft of my wip and will soon be subbing to agents - hopefully later this month or next. Brief logline. . .

Sixteen-year-old Sterling never feared the swamp behind her house . . . until the day it swallowed her brother Phineas whole. When days later, a strange, ethereal girl crawls out of the murky water and calls herself Sterling's sister, the lazy town of Sticks accepts the imposter without question. Sterling is the only one who remembers that she ever had a brother -- and she's the only one who can confront the relentless swamp spirit and fight for Phin’s life.

The last book I read and loved was PEACE LIKE A RIVER by Leif Enger.

(Thanks, Maggie!)

Ooh your story sounds fun! I take it the story is set in the deep South? While I may not "love" gators I did live in southern Mississippi and Louisiana long enough to develop an appreciation/respect for the critters. :) I'd love to read a sample of your story to see if I can help out (and I went ahead with friending you since your blog's a hoot). :-D

I'm looking for a YA reader for a soon-to-be-redrafted story about elementals, wolves, vampires--oh my!--in a post-apocalyptic/post-human-dominance world. Little bit of romance (a partnership for any reader! lol). Draft ended at 60000 words-ish.

The last book I read was....Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson. Right before that I read the newest Patricia Briggs and C.E. Murphy.

Also Canadian :)

This is such a great idea! I have a critique group, but not a partner who can go in-depth (and more than 8 pages at a time)!

My WIP is at about 50,000 words, from YA POV but with many adult themes. Contemporary and set in the Deep South. I'm already looking at agents.

Finished COFA in one day, but LOVED "Teach Me" by R.A. Nelson. (I'm a YA book blogger, too.)

Re: critique partner
Guess I should add my blurb :)

It’s a charmed life … on the surface. Scratch away the veneer, and you’ll find chaos beneath.

Kat lives in a lovely Southern town built on old money and tradition. She’s a piano virtuoso who dreams of attending a prestigious music school in New York. She’s willing to work hard to get what she wants, and enlists the help of Juilliard graduate Isaac Laroche.

She can’t understand why he gave up the glamour of New York to return to the South. He doesn’t know her life depends on escaping it.
Kat must face down madness from without and within. Isaac must resist a growing attraction.

When present wants and needs collide with sins of the past, the results are disastrous.

Hi! I'm Michella, I don't have an agent or all that fun stuff.

I usually write YA, but I'm open to other genres. Right now I'm working on a script for Script Frenzy. It's a play (that's not YA, see??) about one man- ahh... I'll just give you the logline: One man embarks on a journey to paint a self portrait in hopes of finding himself, but instead finds the people in his life.

Last book I read? Where She Went by Gayle Forman, City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare, and Hamlet by William Shakespeare.

Thanks for doing this Maggie!

Commercial literary (eh?) women's fiction. In a small seaside New England town three sisters are transformed by unexpected love, death and a touch of magic. Agented. Last book(s): The Red Garden, Alice Hoffman, Case Histories, Kate Atkinson, The Radleys, Matt Haig. Eclectic tastes but always about the writing.

My story is about a xenophobic mage seeking the power to exterminate a race, the main character being of said race. Basically a darker-themed YA high fantasy with a few adjustments. It just entered the actual writing phase, though, so I only have a few thousand words so far. No agent, and my favorite fantasy series is the Wheel of Time, because it's a meticulously developed example of a tried-and-true genre. I'm also willing to provide critique even though I don't have the 50 pages quite yet, but I do plan to power through this first draft.
Lizbit[info]CatGirl5 on April 7th, 2011 07:53 pm (UTC)
I'm interested.
I LOVE the Wheel of time. I'll be sad when it's over.
I'm currently working on a fantasy/Romance genre novel that I'd love to have some one pick appart for me.
I'm about 45K words into it and need all the help I can get. Mine is about a wicked queen, Shevta, who is seeking all the power of nine mystical rocks. The only thing that stands between her and world domination is Anna who currently has amnesia and Connor a former member of The Royal Gaurd. The story begins with death and blood and hopefully ends with love ... or perhaps more death. I have two endings so far.

Let me know if you're interested. Princess (dot) evans (at) gmail (dot) com

What a great opportunity, Maggie! Thanks so much! I'm not really sure where to place my current novel in terms of age range...it could probably be published as YA or adult. Most of what I write is YA, though. The novel I'm currently working on is about gay vampires. I should probably add a warning that I like writing/ reading novels where nothing much happens: lots of existential angst and exploration of commonplace moments, not a lot of action (which, incidentally, is one of the things I love about the Shiver books!). I've finished the first draft and am within a month or two of having the whole ms typed (yes, I still write first drafts totally by hand, I know it's weird). I'm hoping to revise and start sending out queries by the end of the year. Books I read recently that I really loved...The Replacement, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Will Grayson, Will Grayson, and most recently StarCrossed by Elizabeth Bunce.

Thanks Maggie! I feel like this post was made just for me. *beams*

I am almost finished (at the second-to-last chapter!!) with a YA fantasy with magical elements including a witch who has a clever way of staying forever young. It has some contemporary elements as well since the main character knows nothing of the magical world at first. But she ends up learning more than she bargains for to save the boy that she has grown to love, even if she is not sure if is he real or a figment of her imagination.

I do not currently have an agent, nor have I been published in any way. I am not really NEW, per se, to the writing world, as I originally wanted to write children's books (I have written 5) but I have always loved writing short stories and I sat down a few months ago and started my first novel. I am in college pursuing a degree in creative writing as well, but I make time for writing and reading EVERY night (except during finals).

The last book that I read that embodies me as a reader was actually Carrie Ryan's The Forest Of Hands and Teeth trilogy. I don't necessarily love zombies, but I love the kind of world that she creates. I love to read paranormal and fantasy, but mostly YA. I hate books about divorce and affairs (just an FYI. I'm a hopeless romantic).

Am I making a love connection with anyone yet? :-) If so, my email is stefanienoell @ gmail

I'm currently working on a young adult novel which takes place in two different worlds: ours and a parallel one. It also has people who can turn into dragons and other kinds of shape shifters. Maybe some romance :) A lot of it is still in my head, but I have it pretty well outlined.
The last book I read was "The Hunger Games".

Did I mention that there are two cute boys interested in her? Well, now you know :)
I have a dragon in my story and a shape-shifter who turns into a wolf, both are essential to the story.

The Hunger Games has got me hooked on the dystopian genre.. I can't get enough of it! I'm currently writing YA urban fantasy, but I actually have a dystopian story waiting for me to finish with this WIP so I can get working on it, which I'm hoping will be soon! I'm at about 50k & I'm thinking I might finish off at about 70k..

I just sped through CoFA & I thought it was amazing! I've been a HUGE Mortal Instruments fan for a few years now, Cassandra Clare is definitely one of my favorite authors! Can't wait for Clockwork Prince to come out this fall/winter. :)

Other recent novels that I really liked: Nightshade by Andrea Cremer, Hex Hall & Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins, White Cat & Red Glove by Holly Black, The Demon's Lexicon & The Demon's Covenant by Sarah Rees Brennan & The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting. (On the contemporary side I enjoy pretty much everything Sarah Dessen has ever written & I recently read Kody Keplinger's The Duff & absolutely loved it..)

I'm not agented but I plan on subbing as soon as I finish & polish it up. I have a crit group of sorts, but there's never a chance for them to read more then 1500 words at a time, so another set of eyes would be great, I think!

If you'd like to hear more about my WIP to see if we'd match up, let me know! :)

Desperately seeking experienced YA crit partner unafraid to be painfully honest
Thanks Maggie for helping hook the rest of us up:)
I have currently completed one YA paranormal fantasy manuscript and am shopping it to agents-received one full request so far.

I have started outlining my second and will need a crit partner in the next few weeks. I started my own crit group, but no one is doing YA and I do have one other YA crit partner-an agent/published author but she's pretty busy.

My book is about two characters, written from their POVs: a boy charged with watching over a girl destined to take his place in a war between angels and demons-when he falls for her it complicates his plan to finally live a normal life and the girl who falls for this boy who is inextricably connected to the spirit world she's tried her whole life to ignore.

Books I love: All of Maggies:),Anything Carrie Ryan, Across the Universe,If I Stay, Sisters Red-you get the jist!

Re: Desperately seeking experienced YA crit partner unafraid to be painfully honest
I am definitely an experienced YA reader! And I love all the books you listed so maybe we have a connection? Check out my post: http://m-stiefvater.livejournal.com/198685.html?thread=9814813#t9814813

This is awesome!
Thanks for doing this Maggie!

My novel is based loosely in religious mythology of angels with my own spin. It's definitely YA (genre: Paranormal/Romance/Urban Fantasy) I'm completely unpublished and have no agent though would love feedback to help with the revisions so as to enable me to start sending queries. My draft is currently almost finished at 70,000 words with only a short chapter to go. Am looking for criticism to tighten the story and help it flow.
The last book I read that I adored was Fire by Kristin Cashore.

Re: This is awesome!
Your story sounds really interesting! I'm a fan of angel-mythology. I've been a HUGE Mortal Instruments fan for a few years now, Cassandra Clare's novels are what got me hooked on angels to begin with! I'm also a big fan of Kristin Cashore -- Graceling was awesome too! Other recent novels that I really liked: The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, Nightshade by Andrea Cremer, Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins, White Cat by Holly Black, The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan & The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting.

I'm not finished with my novel, but I'm currently at 50,000 words & I think I will finish at about 70k. It's also in the YA urban fantasy genre!

Thanks for doing this again Maggie!

I currently working on an Urban Fantasy about shape-shifting wrestlers. It's set in the UK and from my female MC's 1st person perspective.

I'm only a few thousand words in at the moment, so I'm not ready for a full critique. I have been writing seriously for about two years, and tend to suffer from Bright and Shiny Syndrome (BSS) and drop projects half way through. I desperately want to break this habit. I know that just having someone else to talk to about my project will give me the push I need to finish. I hate letting anyone down!

I think I would be able to offer useful critique. I'm good with spelling and grammar, characterisation and continuity. I live in the UK (if that is relevant).

I love all things supernatural and prefer stories with more action than romance.

The last books I read and fell in love with were Doomsday Book by Connie Willis and Fire/Graceling by Kristin Cashore.

Critique Partner Needed -Womens Fiction
My humorous and heartwarming novel is about a 32 yr. old "girl" who decided to pursue her passions in search of her purpose for life. While it isn't Chick Lit, it's also not Literary Fiction.

I have had some agent interest, but no representation yet. I would like to edit again, but could really use a critique partner for feedback.

The last book I read that I loved was Little Bee by Chris Cleave.
scampii091[info]scampii091 on April 7th, 2011 02:22 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much for this, Maggie. I'm finding it hard to know where to look for crit. partners, so this is perfect. THANK YOU.

Right, my novel is called ASTRAL WINDS and it is YA fiction. I do not have an agent, but I plan to find one as soon as I have finised, redrafted, redrafted ten more times and edited until my face turns blue as the ocean.

Here is my 'sentence':

"Evie is a fifteen year old brave-heart, battling to be heard in a world of dyslexia and confusion. Her twenty year-old sister Pippa, who is arty and flighty and utterly reliable, is her sun and her father, highly un-funny as he is, is her world. After her whole life is taken by the collar and shaken until the contents are displaced and broken, can Evie fight her way to freedom and find peace in her new, broken world, even if it's not what she'd have picked for herself?"

- I tend to waffle. It's why I need critters. ;)

I also compose my own piano pieces for the soundtrack to my novel, do any of you guys do that kind of thing, too?

The last book I read and loved was December by Elizabeth H. Winthrop, though tomorrow that will probably have changed to something different. I learnt a lot from this book, however. A lot.

Hope to find someone who enjoys my writing :)

A match?
I am interested in helping you with your story. It sounds a lot like mine, or at least one of mine. My story, Wilderness, is part of a trilogy that chronicles the main characters life after both her parents are killed in a car crash. It's YA but I want it to be a series that grows with the reader. I have shiny-new-story-syndrome in that I get distracted by new ideas very easily. I have finished the first draft of Wilderness and am working on revisions.
I love Maggie Stiefvater's works, and Lisa McMann's, Cassandra Clare's and Eva Ibbottsen's (I always misspell her last name, sorry)
If you are interested in seeing if we're a match or if you have any questions my e-mail is: pudeldorlover@hotmail.com

I don't understand what you mean by Crit Partner.
Anyway,
I write Teen Fiction Romance.
It's called "Never Ending Change". It's up online so check it out :D
I want real critiques and stuff.

I'm an Indian girl lol.

I don't remember the last book I read lol. But once I'm done with university work, I wanna read "thirteen reasons why" by Jay Asher :)
scampii091[info]scampii091 on April 8th, 2011 09:24 am (UTC)
Hi :)

A Crit Partner is just someone who critiques your work, making suggestions about what you can improve. If you want to send me the first 10 pages I'd be happy to take a look :)

- Always make time for reading. Even just one page before bed, haha, then you coul read Thirteen Reasons Why before you're done with Uni work ;)
Helene Dunbar[info]Helene_Dunbar on April 7th, 2011 02:36 pm (UTC)
Thanks Maggie! This is great timing.

I have two YA WIPS in the works. One is in revisions and one is almost completed. I'm primarily looking for crit partners for the second at this point.

It is a YA contemporary with a male POV. It is about friendship, acceptance, and organ donation (yeah, I have to work on the tag line!). :-)

I am not agented (haven't sent anything out yet) but am a published journalist and business writer.

Best books I've read recently: The Marbury Lens (Andrew Smith) and Boy Toy (Barry Lyga).
Patti J. Kurtz[info]Patti J. Kurtz on April 7th, 2011 02:43 pm (UTC)
This is a cool idea, Maggie. I always have trouble finding someone who's willing to read a whole novel.

My current novel in progress (I have several) is young adult sports/mystery (auto racing, female protagonist). I'm on a deep revision and when I finish the revision, I plan to start querying agents.

I recently read Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly-- fantastic writer.

I'm not Canadian, but I live close to the border (80 miles) in North Dakota. Does that count?

Looking crit partner
Here's a 1 sentence blurb:

"Jess Briggs is under enough pressure already, facing her first race on the Junior Stock Car Circuit and trying to persuade herself that she has the talent to live up to her father's reputation as a NASCAR driver, but when she starts seeing a guy who looks like her brother Pete, who was killed in a car crash a year ago, she's torn between trying to solve the mystery and wanting to believe that Pete is somehow really alive."

It's really a lot about family relationship, love and grief, as well as racing.

This is so great!

I write YA and I'm interested in paranormal, fantasy, dystopian, sci fi, contemporary. I finished a long novel but I've been stuck in revising phase for forever now, so would love to get feedback. No agent yet but would like to get to querying stage as soon as is realistic.

Last book I read and loved was Across the Universe by Beth Revis. Been searching for kind crit partner(s) with similar tastes and sensibilities, so hope to find someone cool here!
Kelly Powell[info]Kelly Powell on April 7th, 2011 04:49 pm (UTC)
Hi!
I write YA as well, with similar tastes :) I'm also stuck in the revising phase and I'm at 30,000 words. My novel is about angels. Kind of. So do you want to swap 15-20 pages with me?
I LOVE Across The Universe. It's an amazing book.

Emily Weaver[info]EmilyEWeaver on April 7th, 2011 02:52 pm (UTC)
I could use another crit partner. I am agented. I have one partner and she's awesome, but I'd love a second pair of eyes as well. I write YA's in verse, so someone who has read verse novels would be preferable as they are a different kind of animal. (You don't have to write in verse, just be familiar with them.) My other crit partner does not write in verse either.

My WIP is a verse/dystopian.

Thanks for doing this Maggie!
scampii091[info]scampii091 on April 8th, 2011 09:27 am (UTC)
Hi! I don't as of yet write in verse but it is something I have long since been interested: I'm not agented yet but plan to be someday. I write poetry a lot so maybe this might help?

Let me know what you think, and happy writing!

My WIP is YA teen drama I guess (one of the characters writes her chapters in poems, short ones, but still!).
