My Second Post About Food. This Time, Imaginary.
Well, slightly imaginary.

Weirdly, it has now suddenly only days away until THE SCORPIO RACES comes out. I remember back when it was still SecretNovel. So. October 18th. (well, October 20th, if you're coming to the release party in D.C.). Rumor has it is has already appeared in some readers' hands.

I'm not thinking about that. I'm so very ulcer-free right now. I mean, I've already waxed poetic about how this is my favorite novel of everything that I've ever written. And I've already talked a little bit about how I spent an obsessive amount of time on the research for this novel. (CUE THE SLIDESHOW OF ENDLESS CLIFFS). But now it is time to share recipes.

I’ve always loved reading food descriptions in books, and one of my favorite agonizing pleasures was reading about foods that didn’t exist. I still remember the 42 century butter pies on a stick that Diana Wynne Jones wrote about in A Tale of Time City. Completely delicious sounding. Completely not real. I always wanted to be that author. The one that torments loads of readers by inventing food so delicious they can't resist it . . . and then laughing meanly when they realize it's not real.

And I had the perfect opening in THE SCORPIO RACES. It's set on a tiny, remote island with not much to do and the yearly Scorpio Races are a big deal, so to kick it all off they have a folk festival involving bonfires, superstitions, and beer. This, I thought, would be a great place to insert a fake seasonal food. At first, all I had was the name: November Cakes. Even I wasn't quite sure how these things would bake up until the main character's brother showed them to us:

Finn finds my left hand, opens my fingers, and puts a November cake in my palm. It oozes honey and butter, rivulets of the creamy frosting joining the honey in the pit of my hand. It begs to be licked.

Of course, as with all food descriptions in my novels, I quickly warmed to my mission and proceeded to fill the pages of the book with more things about "the moist crumb, the nectar that seeps from the base of it, the icing that soaks into the cake before you can lick it off." Oh, yes, now we were getting somewhere. My legacy as a fake food writer was beginning to look more promising.

There was only one problem. Something about this book demanded that I put my hands on everything in it I possibly could. I had to do an incredible amount of hands-on research for it, because I just couldn't stand to wing anything. And this exact same principle meant that I found myself in the kitchen spending hours trying to make November Cakes.

Basically, I've failed in my quest to invent a lovely fake food. Because I'm sad to report that November Cakes are no longer fake. Nothing can be fictional if there's a recipe:

ETA! USE THIS RECIPE! November Cakes, II.

*dedicated blog/ twitter/ facebook followers might remember when I was asking about Golden Syrup. This was the recipe I was thinking of. You can use it instead of honey.

Ah, now I understand what you meant with books and food.
Now I really want to bake cakes!
Unfortunately, it's already 8.30 here.
All love,
Angela

:) love this post. I remember my first food book. Little House in the Big Woods, so I must have been in second or third grade. I read that book for the descriptions of food, over and over again, even when I sort of thought the rest was boring.

Those look and sound amazing!
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on October 17th, 2011 04:42 am (UTC)
Oh yes!!! There are fantastic food descriptions in those books in general. mmmmm . . .

Those look so good! It's great that the November Cakes are real because we can eat them as we read your book. Nothing better than reading and eating. :)

Maybe reading and eating and listening to music.

silvertwi[info]silvertwi on October 15th, 2011 08:05 pm (UTC)
I'm glad I read this right after our Fall Fest, where I stuffed myself full of pies, bean chile, and apple cider. It means I'm not hungry enough to eat another bite...

Question:

I'm fairly new to baking, but I've made bread (specifically challah) before and did the kneading by hand. Is there a way to do this recipe without a bread machine?
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on October 17th, 2011 04:44 am (UTC)
mmmmm chili . . . .

You could do this with a bread machine -- you'll have to knead by hand for a bit longer, probably 8-10 minutes, and be careful to work in as little flour as possible. That's really where I find the standing mixer handy. I can knead without incorporating a lot of flour to keep it from sticking (especially with this dough, which is pretty wet).

FINALLY!
Oh my goodness thank you so much. As soon as I read about these in the ARC I googled them, cried when I realised they weren't real, then posted on your wall on facebook begging for a recipe. So thank you. So many times over.
Because you have just satisfied months of craving that I thought would never be satisfied.
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on October 17th, 2011 04:44 am (UTC)
Re: FINALLY!
Hhahahaha -- it makes me so pleased to know that you were sad over my fake food, even if it wasn't really fake food.
Fiona Li[info]f_li on October 15th, 2011 08:44 pm (UTC)
I'm impressed! She cooks, she bakes, she paints, she draws, what can you not do? Those november cakes look scrumptious! The glaze is actually a really good idea.
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on October 17th, 2011 04:44 am (UTC)
Haha, I have to cook, because I am allergic to preservatives and have to make loads of things from scratch.
sc_pollock[info]sc_pollock on October 15th, 2011 09:15 pm (UTC)
Yum! They look a little like profiteroles - but without the cream or chocolate. So ok, maybe not that much like profiteroles...

But there is a touch of success here. Because while you made your 'fake food' very real, there is an element of American recipes that involve the use of measuring in 'cups', that makes them elusive to us folk in England! We try to follow them, but get them horribly wrong! We know that, in fact, using a 'cup' as a measurement device is actually very simple and effective, but we are so used to measuring things using gr, kg, lb, oz, pints, etc, that when someone offers us a failsafe method, and says, "Here - use a CUP - for EVERYTHING!" our mouths open wide, and we - well we fail. ;-)
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on October 17th, 2011 04:45 am (UTC)
If it makes you feel any better, I always found the oz. thing intimidating. So dreadfully specific. What happens if I go over or under!?

Sarah[info]mediate89 on October 15th, 2011 10:43 pm (UTC)
Aw man, I've wanted a stand mixer for years. I bake all the time (cakes, cookies, cupcakes, quick breads, etc) and make all my own icing and fillings and you have NO idea how much easier it would all be if I had a machine that held the bowl and did all of my mixing for me...

So if you have a spare you ever need to give away... ;D

The cakes look delicious. Can't wait for the new book! I'd make them to eat in celebration as I read but I'm afraid if I did that I would have a new recipe of my own: glazed book.
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on October 17th, 2011 04:46 am (UTC)
Oh, they are DELIGHTFUL. Standing mixers, I mean. I use mine for EVERYTHING.

I used to hate reading fantasy books. I'd pick them up for swords and sorcery and instead spend my day drooling over descriptions of fresh baked bread and stew.

After reading the candy-scene in Shiver I found myself going to the bakery.

Now it looks like I'm going to burn my house down when The Scorpio Races arrives in the mail. They told me to stay out of the kitchen but they look so tasty...
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on October 17th, 2011 04:46 am (UTC)
>:D I hope you'll try them.

Oooh, those look delicious! I'm tempted to add pumpkin to them somehow too... May have to attempt and report back how well it succeeds!
(I love taking fake foods and making them real! It's awesome for parties with bibliomaniacs to see who can make the most crazy concoction and have it be still good!)
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on October 17th, 2011 04:46 am (UTC)
Oooooh yes and TAKE PHOTOS FOR ME.
Liv[info]rococoblue on October 16th, 2011 01:11 am (UTC)
My first thought: Those looks so unhealthy.
My second thought: OHMYGODINEEDTOMAKETHEM.
Do you suppose there's a way to make a cupcake version of these absolutely delicious-looking November cakes? Weird question, I know. I'm cupcake-obsessed. I think of all desserts in terms of cupcakes. I so bet I could find a way.
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on October 17th, 2011 04:47 am (UTC)
I actually made half of the batch in cupcake tins, which made them pretty shaped. But I suspect they would also be delicious if you used a yellow cake base -- something from scratch, not a box, because otherwise it'll be too damn sweet -- and just did the glaze and icing over them.

Yes! There is a recipe to the pictures I asked about!

YAY. Except. I don't have a standing mixer. Hm.
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on October 17th, 2011 04:48 am (UTC)
There IS a picture!

You could knead by hand for 8-10 minutes. Just be careful not to add too much flour to prevent sticking, because it's a pretty gooey dough.

Wow, Thanks alot!
I read your blog post with two of my sons and as soon as they saw the photos they wanted to know where to buy them. I told them you don't buy them you bake them. Immediatly they ran to the oven saying they were ready to bake. Looks like I need to get cooking! November cakes here we come.

It is a most appropriate time for Sunday brunch while I am reading this, and now all I want is to see a pan of November cake goodness cooling in our kitchen. I will have to settle for my omelette with extra sharp cheddar instead.

And yes, The Scorpio Races has landed in some readers' hands early: ours. My indie called on Thursday to say that my copy was in and waiting for me. Once home with it, Lover and I compared the ARC to the finished copy and were delighted by the special paper treatment in the front and the ivory paper on which it's printed. Very classy. :)
Maggie Stiefvater[info]m_stiefvater on October 17th, 2011 04:49 am (UTC)
Why thank you. I really, really like the finished copies in comparison to the ARCs. Very stylish, I think, and not hinted at by the ARC.

And I have to say the omelette sounds delish too.
valeriekwrites[info]valeriekwrites on October 16th, 2011 06:39 pm (UTC)
Oh, must try this!

Also, I'm jealous, I've been trying to invent a dessert (preferably cake but maybe pie, or okay, even cookies) since I was ten. I will try harder now.

Hahaha -- I had a scholarship to a culinary school that I passed up. It should shock you not at all that I wanted to be a pastry chef.
