Just a quick post to say that despite my sequel woes, I had time to do some more weekly study today on one of my two artists of the month, John Bauer. The nitty gritties are at my art blog.

As I mentioned earlier this week, I am studying Kay Nielsen and John Bauer, two turn of the century fantasy illustrators, over at my art blog every Sunday. Well, this is the first Sunday so I've got info on Nielsen and some of my sketches. Please come check it out!

Well, the Kay Nielsen-John Bauer fantasy illustration project is underway at my art blog, so feel free to join in on the discussion or just lurk and learn. Every Sunday for the next month I'll be taking an in depth look at one of those two artists and trying to incorporate some of their styles into my own. This week, my first sketches are up (as you can see at the left). Please come over and join us there.

Last year, I studied a safely dead artist nearly every month until I got my book contract. Then, edits sort of took over my life. But now that it's 2008, I'd like to get back into the habit of picking an artist's work apart for a month or two, defining what I like about them, and then creating a piece in that style, incorporating what I've learned.

So I'm doing it in depth over at my art blog, Greywaren Art, and all other artists are invited to join in and have a big links fest for January and February, rah rah rah.

Actually, it would be kind of cool to have writers who are not artistic in the 2D sense join in too, if they wanted too, and write a new short story based upon one of their works. Hmmm . . .

Anyway, the two artists that I'm studying for Jan/Feb are turn of the century Nordic illustrators, Kay Nielsen and John Bauer, and both of them illustrated numerous fairy tales. I love their work -- the darkness of it, the brief shining highlights, the simplicity, the moody palettes. I really want to learn how to wield the weapons they did. Every Sunday I'm going to do a post on my progress and more info that I've dug up about them. Should be fun. Or at least - gasp - informative.
